Neuroplasticity in Geelong

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to rewire itself by forming new neural connections. Once believed to occur only in childhood, research has shown that the adult brain remains capable of change and continues to learn through experience.

Early pioneers such as Donald Hebb (1940s-50s) laid the theoretical groundwork with the principle that “neurons that fire together wire together,” explaining how repeated thoughts and behaviours strengthen neural pathways. Later, (1980s-90s), neuroscientist Michael Merzenich demonstrated through scientific analysis that the brain can reshape itself through deliberate training and environmental input. Researchers and clinicians — such as Psychiatrist, Norman Doidge, popularised the concept for wider audiences from 2000. Today, neuroplasticity is central to many evidence-based psychological approaches.

Helen Handsjuk’s training in neuro-psychotherapy and mindfulness has allowed her clients to identify and understand their conditioned patterns in thinking and behaviour, assisting them to pave the foundations needed for rewiring for sustained change.

This modern psychological intervention involving neuroplasticity is an integral modality that Helen uses to help with other psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression and trauma.
